The Precourt Institute for Energy (PIE) serves as the hub of energy research and education at Stanford University. Established in 2009, PIE seeks to transform energy by supporting cutting-edge research and facilitating collaboration. PIE also helps develop energy-literate leaders and communities through educational programs and the dissemination of research results.
“Our mission is clear: a global energy system that is economical and efficient, sustainable and secure.” Jay Precourt.
The philosophy of PIE is best explained by Dr. Frankin M. Orr, Jr. Director of PIE:
“Energy is the lifeblood of modern societies. Our use of it globally is expected to rise more than 40% in 25 years, and unmet demand from a growing population will be greater still. But, the way we supply and use energy is altering climate and creating other vulnerabilities, all of which will magnify if we continue to meet rising demand with existing methods. Instead, we must learn to supply affordable, secure energy services to both well-established and developing countries while protecting the global systems that provide fresh water, food and air. Transforming the world’s energy systems is the grand challenge we must face this century. The challenge requires vigorous research on a broad portfolio of new technologies…..The challenge is also educational, raising energy literacy, informing policymakers, and training the next generation of scientists, engineers, civil servants and entrepreneurs.”
